If you have an allergy, asthma, or sinus problem, having a no-fuss air purifier that you can count on every day is imperative.
So, if you’re in the market for a good and affordable air purifier, the Levoit LV-PUR131 is an appealing candidate. Let’s discuss this neat machine starting from the design, all the way to the build quality, performance, and price/value.
Measuring 14.5 x 7.2 x 18.5 inches and weighing 15.8 pounds, it’s not the smallest nor the biggest home air purifier in the market. Levoit claims it is a convenient size.
The boxy design of the LV-PUR131 air purifier is simple. It won’t turn heads, but it does look clean and sleek. The front features Levoit logo on the top right and that’s pretty much it.
The controls are all on the top along with the air vent and they are well laid out. There are six touch controls on top with no clicky buttons anywhere to be found.
The center part of the control features an indicator light. It goes from red, yellow, green, to blue as the air quality improves.
The air intake is located on the side, so you can place it right against the wall. The boxy shape is the LV-PUR131 enables you to do just that. Levoit, however, suggests that there should be at least 15 inches of clearance on all four sides to help with air circulation.
The Levoit LV-PUR131 has great build quality. Everything looks and feels good.
Everything is made of plastic and there’s nothing wrong with that as they are high-quality plastics. Fit and finish are also excellent. Try setting the fan on High and it doesn’t rattle like mad.
It’s the same story inside the unit. The filters fit snugly and easy to change. You won’t find wobbly stuff in there.
At 15.8 pounds, the unit has quite a heft to it, but it’s nothing hard to manage in case you need to move it around from spot to spot.
The LV-PUR131 air purifier is rated for a room up to 322 sq. ft. in size. It uses three-stage filtering where the air goes through the pre-filter, HEPA, and carbon filter.
The pre-filter and High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter in the Levoit LV-PUR131 is put in the same filter cartridge.
That pre-filter does a great job of trapping large allergens such as pet hair, which leaves the HEPA filter to take on the smaller particulates. This setup will improve the lifetime of the HEPA filter since it doesn’t have to do all the filtering task all by itself.
This unit uses true HEPA filter which is superior to a HEPA-type filter. It can trap 99.97% of airborne dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, smoke, and other allergens with a diameter of 0.3 microns or less.
You will notice a significant decrease in dust hovering around or sticking to the furniture, drapes, and practically everything.
The fan has three speed settings: Low, Normal, and High. It’s very quiet on Low setting. You can barely hear it even when you try. You can hear it whispering on the High setting though. The manual states that the noise level is less than 52 dB on high.
That’s just like a refrigerator. That’s an acceptable noise considering you won’t be putting it on High all the time. Just for the record, the noise level for casual conversation and an air conditioner is in the 60dB range.
Here’s a neat video measuring the noise levels in various conditions. It really put the quietness of the Levoit into perspective.
If you intend to put this in the bedroom, just use the Sleep setting when you’re off to bed. It’s even quieter than Low and you won’t have any problem sleeping through the night while it’s running.
If you wish to run it for a specified time, use the timer. You can have it running for 1 to 12 hours then it shuts off automatically.
We recommend running the unit in Automatic mode. It starts off in Sleep setting and kicks it up when it senses poor air quality. Once the air is clean, it goes back to Sleep setting.
The LV-PUR131 has a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) rating of 135+. This number says that this unit reduces dust, smoke, and pollen particle levels to the same concentration as if it’s adding more than 135 cubic feet of clean air per minute.
Since this air purifier has a carbon filter, it does an excellent job of removing odor. It can completely remove odor after you’re done cooking in less than half an hour. It takes care of odor from pets and cigarette smoke too.

It’s a shame that this unit cannot get rid of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, etc.
VOCs are common in any modern household. They come from off-gassing from new furniture, carpeting, flame retardant, and cleaning products to name a few.
If you are worried about VOCs in your home, we suggest getting some common houseplant snake plant, bamboo palm, or Chinese evergreen. The NASA Clean Air Study has proven that those plants are effective for absorbing VOCs.
One quick note: Before use, be sure to remove the plastic bag covering the filter and the black foam tape covering the dust sensor. Some users forgot to do these and they complained that their units are not working as they should.
Levoit does not claim this unit as an Energy Star appliance, but it’s highly energy efficient. It only uses 12 Watts of electricity on Low and 40 Watts on High. You won’t get a heart attack when the next electricity bill comes.
“What about filter replacements?”
Yes, you’re supposed to replace the filter once every six months. The Change Filter light will tell you when.
However, as long as the unit can still maintain excellent air quality (i.e. the air quality indicator is green or blue), it’s safe to postpone the filter change to a later date. Just reset the Filter Change light so it stops blinking.
Some users also vacuum the pre-filter periodically to extend its life. A pretty smart and simple method if you ask us. Just don’t try to wash them as they are not washable.
Thankfully, the filter is affordable so it won’t burn a hole in your pocket when it’s time to finally change it.
Levoit has successfully made an interesting offer with the LV-PUR131. It looks good and easy to use. The total cost of ownership is reasonable too.
The price of the unit, electricity bill, and filter replacement cost are all affordable. It doesn’t handle VOCs, but you can remedy that by planting some common houseplants around the house.
Overall, it’s an excellent air purifier a medium-sized room up to 322 sq. ft. You will notice an immediate improvement in the overall air quality when you have this running.
That means less allergy, asthma, or sinus problems for you and your family. Your home will also smell fresher all day long. It’s definitely a worthy investment.
